Solana Beach residents who want broken appliances, old mattresses or bulky furniture hauled from their curb for free need to call EDCO starting the week of Monday, Sept. 21, to lock in a spot before the city's Fall Sustainable Recycling Day on Saturday, Oct. 3.

The city and its contracted waste hauler, EDCO, will host the cleanup event from 9 a.m. to noon in the La Colonia Community Center parking lot, 715 Valley Ave., at the Valley Avenue entrance, according to an announcement posted by the city on Monday, Aug. 17.

What's available at the event

Residents who drive to La Colonia can take advantage of several free services:

  • On-site paper shredding via certified shredding trucks, limited to two banker's boxes (10″×12″×15″) per household.
  • E-waste drop-off for TVs, computer monitors, printers, fax machines, VCRs, DVD players and cell phones.
  • Free compost and mulch, self-load and self-haul, limited to three cans or bags per vehicle. Open trucks or trailers must bring a tarp.
  • Goodwill donations of clothing, shoes, kitchenware and home decor. A list of items Goodwill will not accept is available at edcodisposal.com.

The announcement noted that electronic waste must be brought to the event and should not be left curbside. A lithium-ion battery fire in early August at Via Mil Cumbres and Lomas Santa Fe Drive, where firefighters extinguished a recycling load ejected from a truck, underscores why e-waste needs proper handling.

Curbside bulky-item pickup

Residents can place up to four bulky items at the curb for collection on Oct. 3, but only after scheduling with EDCO by phone at (858) 350-8544 beginning the week of Sept. 21. Items must be curbside by 7 a.m. that Saturday.

Eligible items include broken appliances, water heaters, furniture and old mattresses. Mattresses must be wrapped in a disposal bag, available at hardware stores. Tree trimmings must be cut to 3-foot lengths and tied in bundles no wider than 18 inches; paper bags are accepted, but plastic bags are not.

Who can participate

The event is open only to Solana Beach residents. Debris from contractors, landscapers or commercial businesses will not be accepted, nor will household hazardous waste or tires.

The event is also listed on EDCO's website.

Residents wanting mulch should arrive early and bring a shovel. Supplies are first-come, first-served.
