The San Diego Sports Association (SDSA) named Torrey Pines boys tennis head coach Jan Guevara its Coach of the Year.
The Torrey Pines boys tennis program announced the honor on Oct. 13, marking the end of the 2026 season. The award follows Guevara's first season leading the program, which ended with a CIF San Diego Section Open Division championship.
Torrey Pines beat district rival Canyon Crest Academy 10-8 in the Open Division final on May 1 at Barnes Tennis Center in Point Loma. The match lasted nearly four hours, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Freshmen drove the title run. David Reuv and Robbie Grimmes won all three of their doubles matches, and Jorge Obregon and Marcus Huang swept theirs.
"It feels amazing, especially as a freshman to help the team win," Reuv told the Union-Tribune by phone during the bus ride home after the final.
Guevara, after the May victory, told the Union-Tribune the championship showed the Falcons have "great athletes and great character."
The section title was Torrey Pines' 26th, second all-time only to La Jolla. Since the Open Division was created in 2015, either Torrey Pines or CCA has won every Open crown. The Falcons now hold seven to CCA's three.
The team page's announcement also reminded players to submit Athletic Clearance forms during the off-season. The program expects to resume in February 2027.
