Carmel Valley's Eva Zoe Mather sang the national anthem at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar on Sept. 26, with paratroopers dropping onto the tarmac behind her.

Mather, a 13-year-old freshman at Torrey Pines High School, performed during the opening ceremony of the 2026 Miramar Air Show. The event was officially branded "America's Air Show" for 2026 to mark the nation's 250th anniversary, NBC 7 San Diego reported. The three-day show ran Sept. 25-27.

It was Mather's second time performing the anthem at the air show, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. The Union-Tribune did not report which year she first sang there.

As Mather performed, members of the United States Special Operations Command Para-Commandos parachuted down to the tarmac. The paratrooper descent unfolded during her rendition of the anthem, giving the ceremony a dramatic military backdrop.

After the performance, two senior officers presented Mather with a commemorative coin. Col. R. Erik Herrmann, commanding officer of MCAS Miramar, and Maj. Gen. Robert B. Brodie, commanding general of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, both participated in the Sept. 26 opening ceremony, according to a Defense Visual Information Distribution Service caption. Brodie delivered a speech during the ceremony.

Mather is a classically trained singer who has built a growing list of anthem performances across San Diego. She has sung at San Diego Padres, San Diego FC and Gulls games, the Union-Tribune reported.

Torrey Pines High is part of the San Dieguito Union High School District and enrolls about 2,536 students in grades 9 through 12. Mather is among the school's roughly 630 freshmen.

Mather's next scheduled performance is at Balboa Park December Nights, a free annual festival set for Dec. 4-5.
