Del Mar jockeys Juan Hernandez and Umberto Rispoli are training and recovering at a new Solana Beach wellness center between races at the summer meet.

Bluprint Wellness, a luxury longevity and performance center at 137 Lomas Santa Fe Drive, opened in February in a former hardwood flooring center that founder Jonathan Uphoff spent about three and a half years transforming. Uphoff, a Solana Beach resident and 27-year veteran of the fitness industry, told the San Diego Union-Tribune he first scouted the space a decade ago.

Uphoff said he started by "dreaming big and doing something different," adding, "This is it, this is going to be my legacy."

The facility combines one-on-one personal training, functional medicine with on-site naturopathic doctor Lain Lye, and recovery options including infrared saunas, cryotherapy and cold plunge tubs. A former dusty back lot with an ocean view became an outdoor exercise and event lawn.

Bluprint's gym features what Uphoff described as the first allocation in the country of Technogym Biostrength equipment, manufactured in Italy. Members use a wristband to log in to each machine, tracking body composition and progress with real-time data. Technogym representatives visited the facility in March to see the installation, according to the Union-Tribune profile.

Membership is by application only. No pricing details have been published.

The jockey connection gives the center a distinctly local flavor. Hernandez, who had 30 wins at Del Mar at the time of the Union-Tribune's Sept. 1 profile, used Bluprint for a workout and recovery session earlier in August before flying to London to race at York, then returning the next day to ride in the Pacific Classic at Del Mar.

His workouts focus on leg strength and keeping his weight stable. The cold plunge was his first.

"I like the recovery because I feel fresh to do my races … My muscles feel relaxed to go win a race," Hernandez told the Union-Tribune.

Rispoli, who was named jockey of the week by the Jockey Guild after winning the Grade II Del Mar Mile and the Green Flash, had 20 wins for the summer meeting as of Aug. 27, according to Union-Tribune racing coverage. Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith and up-and-comer Diego Herrera also train at Bluprint during the meet.

The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club's summer meet closes Monday, Sept. 7, according to America's Best Racing.

Uphoff, a native of El Paso, Texas, started his first wellness business at 23, ran studios in Texas and Florida, and served as a corporate athletic director before moving to San Diego in 2011. He hired Dr. Lye on the spot the first time they met, according to the Union-Tribune. Creative director Karen Cook came on shortly before the February opening to shape the member experience and community outreach.
