Foster teens at San Pasqual Academy started the school year with stuffed backpacks, new school-logo hoodies and sweatpants, and a pizza party on Sunday, Aug. 23, thanks to a coalition of Rancho Santa Fe and Solana Beach volunteers.

The Rotary Club of Rancho Santa Fe assembled backpacks filled with pens, pencils, paper, rulers, earbuds, sketchbooks, binders, pocket folders and flash drives for the students, according to a news release in the San Diego Union-Tribune. Solana Santa Fe School and National Charity League members also collected supplies, while the Rotary Club of Escondido contributed hygiene items including body wash, face wash, shampoo, conditioner and deodorant.

The students call the annual event "Shop 'Til You Drop Day."

The campus auditorium filled with donated goods that foster teens could browse and select for themselves. Friends of San Pasqual Academy, the Rancho Santa Fe-based nonprofit that organized the event, purchased a hooded shirt and sweatpants bearing the school logo for every student, along with additional supplies and hygiene products. Each teen also received a large fabric welcome bag with the organization's logo. The day ended with a pizza party for all students and staff.

"These kids, for the most part, do not have anyone purchasing school supplies, clothing items or hygiene products for them to begin the school year," board member Lois Jones said in the release. "We do this for our own children and it is great to see so many caring people do this same thing for these wonderful foster teens."

San Pasqual Academy is a residential school in Escondido that houses and educates foster youth ages 12 to 17. As of March, 42 students were enrolled, according to KPBS.

The nonprofit earned the California Nonprofit of the Year Award in May through the office of Assemblymember Dr. Darshana Patel. Board members Joan Scott and Kathy Lathrum accepted the honor at the Capitol Building in Sacramento.

Friends of San Pasqual Academy has supported foster teens on the campus for more than 25 years, funding programs that range from college scholarships to holiday parties and proms. Volunteers pictured at Sunday's event included board members Teri Summerhays, Andrea Reynolds, Jones, Joan Scott and Kathy Lathrum, along with David Wright and Keith Knickenbocker.
