Amerman Racing's Repo Man broke his maiden with authority Thursday, Aug. 27, at Del Mar, winning the juvenile turf feature by a length and a half in his first career start.

The 2-year-old Golden Pal colt covered five furlongs on the seaside grass course in :58.07 under jockey Umberto Rispoli, earning a $48,000 winner's check. He paid $5.00 as the race favorite.

Trainer Michael McCarthy had put the colt through eight workouts leading up to the race, including a bullet :47.20 from the gate Aug. 20 at Del Mar, according to Del Mar publicity. The preparation paid off for the racy bay, who was purchased for $235,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Midatlantic May Two-Year-Old in Training sale at Timonium, Maryland.

Rispoli has been on a tear since returning from a January spill. He was named Jockey of the Week by the Jockeys' Guild after winning two graded stakes Saturday, Aug. 22: the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile with King of Gosford and the Grade 2 Green Flash Handicap with Sorrento Sky. That Green Flash victory was his 50th career stakes win at Del Mar.

Through Aug. 27, Rispoli had 18 wins at the summer meet, tied for third in the jockey standings with Antonio Fresu. McCarthy sat sixth in the trainer standings with eight wins.

King Anunoby, owned by Madaket Stables, LaPenta and Strauss, finished second in the feature. Pegram, Watson or Weitman's Hoaxer was a nose back in third. All three in-the-money finishers were making their first career starts.

Repo Man's sire, Golden Pal, leads the nation's 2026 freshman sire class with 17 winners from 77 starters, a 22.1% strike rate, according to Horse Racing Nation.

Del Mar racing resumes Friday, Aug. 28, with first post at 2 p.m. The track's Bing Crosby Season fall meet opens Nov. 7 and runs through Nov. 29, featuring the Grade 3 Cecil B. DeMille Stakes for 2-year-olds on closing day.
