Santa Fe Christian beat Westview 70-0 on Saturday, Sept. 5, improving to 3-0 on the season. Torrey Pines lost 21-14 to Rancho Bernardo the same evening after surrendering a late lead, dropping to 2-1. The results split Week 3 for the area's two ranked CIF San Diego Section football programs.
Labrum throws four TDs in SFC rout
No. 9 Santa Fe Christian's offense was relentless. Quarterback Dax Labrum completed 14 of 17 passes for 212 yards and four touchdowns, two to Chase Wooley, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. AJ Haynes rushed for two scores and Brodie Stuart added a rushing touchdown.
Brock Taylor caught a touchdown pass and blocked a punt. James Crecion returned an interception for another score. Westview fell to 1-2.
The Eagles have outscored opponents 150-20 through three games, per NOLA.com. Labrum, a Cornell commit, has completed 48 of 66 passes (72.7 percent) for 811 yards, 10 touchdowns and zero interceptions this season.
Wooley leads the receiving corps with 19 catches for 426 yards and five touchdowns. Brady Berg paces the team with seven total touchdowns, five rushing and two receiving.
Drew Brees, the former New Orleans Saints quarterback, serves as SFC's passing game coordinator. That connection sets up a marquee road trip: SFC plays Friday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. at Newman School in New Orleans.
Torrey Pines falls on late Weddle TD
No. 7 Torrey Pines held Rancho Bernardo scoreless through the first half, building a 6-0 lead on two Cullen Green field goals from 34 and 43 yards, the Union-Tribune reported. The Falcons stretched the advantage to 14-7 in the second half when quarterback Blake Miller hit Logan Miller with a 4-yard scoring pass and connected with Logan Bonneau on a 2-point conversion.
Rancho Bernardo's Gaige Weddle answered. A four-star recruit according to 247Sports.com and the son of former San Diego Chargers star Eric Weddle, the sophomore rushed 19 times for 88 yards and scored all three Broncos touchdowns while completing 12 of 17 passes for 102 yards.
The game turned in the final minute. Dre Walker intercepted a Torrey Pines pass with 57 seconds left, giving Rancho Bernardo the ball at the Falcons' 26-yard line. Weddle scored from 12 yards out with 30 seconds remaining.
Brandon Kendro sealed the win with a sack of Miller as the final gun sounded.
Torrey Pines coach Scott Ashby said before the game: "That young man is fun to watch on film. I fear he's going to be a nightmare to play against."
Torrey Pines rushed 35 times for 206 yards, led by Jacob Kreiss's 87. Rancho Bernardo improved to 3-0.
SFC opens its road trip to New Orleans on Friday. Torrey Pines' Week 4 opponent has not been confirmed.
