Del Mar and Rancho Santa Fe families have until Friday, Sept. 18, to shape what their local schools look like for the next three decades.

The San Dieguito Union High School District (SDUHSD) is collecting community input through an online survey at sduhsdplan.com as part of its first Facilities Master Plan update since 2011. The survey asks residents to rate proposed projects at each campus, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Among the proposals: a new gym at Torrey Pines High School, a career technical education building at Carmel Valley Middle School, a modernized performing arts center at San Dieguito Academy and a pool at La Costa Canyon High School. A draft partial list of projects reviewed at a board workshop totaled an estimated $387.25 million, according to the Union-Tribune's Aug. 17 report.

The master plan is a 30-year vision for the district and serves as the first step toward a potential general obligation bond measure. The district has said the earliest a bond could appear on the ballot is November 2028, with the first major projects potentially completed by 2032.

That timeline matters for local property taxpayers.

Funds from SDUHSD's last bond, a $449 million measure voters approved in 2012, are nearly depleted. That bond paid for projects including Pacific Trails Middle School, the rebuild of Earl Warren Middle School and Torrey Pines' performing arts center.

The district hired architectural firm DLR Group in December 2025 to lead the master plan process. Ryan Leonard leads the firm. An Encinitas native, Leonard graduated in La Costa Canyon High School's first class in 1997.

"This is really an opportunity for the community at large to provide feedback on what's important to them on each campus," Leonard told the Union-Tribune on Aug. 17.

DLR Group walked every SDUHSD campus to assess conditions and found repairs needed to HVAC systems, roofing, retaining walls and student spaces, the Union-Tribune reported Aug. 17. The firm also held community outreach sessions in May 2026 at San Dieguito Academy and Pacific Trails Middle School.

The master plan website includes site breakdowns for all schools and district assets, with condition reports, enrollment data and potential costs. The plan and website meet Proposition 2 requirements, the 2024 state measure that provides $8.5 billion to K-12 schools for facility renovations, positioning the district to apply for state funding.

The survey at sduhsdplan.com is open to parents, students, staff and community members through Friday, Sept. 18. No date has been announced for when the completed master plan will go before the SDUHSD board.
