Santa Fe Christian rolled over No. 10 Helix 38-6 on Friday, Aug. 21, and Torrey Pines blanked Radford of Honolulu 45-0 on Thursday, Aug. 20, giving both Solana Beach-area programs emphatic starts to the 2026 football season.

Eagles overpower Helix despite size disadvantage

The Eagles, defending CIF San Diego Section Division 2 champions, handled a Helix squad whose offensive line outweighed SFC's defensive front by 74 pounds per man. Santa Fe Christian's enrollment sits at 442 students; Helix's tops 2,500.

Quarterback Dax Labrum completed 16 of 27 passes for 221 yards and three touchdowns, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Running back Brady Berg scored three times on runs of 2 and 10 yards and a 40-yard reception. Chase Woolley piled up 205 all-purpose yards, highlighted by a 47-yard punt return that set up SFC's first score, a 53-yard kickoff return that set up another and a 32-yard touchdown reception.

On defense, linebacker Charlie Stover recorded 12 tackles. He stands 5-foot-9 and 165 pounds.

"They're all heart," head coach Jon Wallace said after the game. "We tell the kid we win because we're smart and we're tough."

The win extended a remarkable streak: SFC has now won 14 of its last 15 season openers. The Eagles opened 2025 with 13 straight victories en route to a section title before falling in the Southern California regionals.

The game, played at Santa Fe Christian in Solana Beach, was selected as the FOX 5 San Diego Prep Pigskin Report City Game of the Week. SFC's quarterback coach is Pro Football Hall of Famer Drew Brees, inducted earlier this month. Brees' son, Baylen, is a senior wide receiver on the roster.

Torrey Pines shuts out Radford in Hawaii

Torrey Pines traveled to Honolulu and posted a 45-0 shutout of Radford on Thursday, Aug. 20, the Falcons' first Week 1 shutout since 2018, the Union-Tribune reported.

No individual stats or player quotes were available from the game.

Santa Fe Christian's next marquee road trip is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 10, at Isidore Newman School in Louisiana. Torrey Pines' Week 2 opponent has not yet been confirmed.
