Torrey Pines High School senior David "Duck" Choy played in all three matches for the USA Rugby U18 Boys National Team during a July tour of South America, helping the U.S. beat Brazil 36-26.

Choy played every match.

The 6-foot-4, 250-pound lock and prop was one of 28 players selected to the national squad, The Coast News reported on Wednesday, Aug. 26. He was one of only a handful who appeared in every contest on the 19-day tour, which ran July 3 through July 22 and traveled to Montevideo, Uruguay, and Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The U.S. faced Uruguay, Brazil and the Buenos Aires Academy. The tour's highlight came July 14 in Montevideo, where the Americans topped Brazil 36-26.

"They were on a whole other level, especially Argentina," Choy told The Coast News. "We practiced together for a week. They have been practicing together for years."

Choy was one of five San Diego Mustangs youth rugby club members selected to the national team, joining Ean Glover, Reese Reiter, Max Marshall and Carson Bischoff.

The 17-year-old's international debut capped a breakout year. He helped lead Torrey Pines' club rugby team to an undefeated regular season and a runner-up finish at the California State High School Rugby Championship. With the Mustangs, the defending national champions, he helped the club reach the national championship in Elkhart, Indiana, where they finished as runners-up.

Choy first played rugby at age 8, stopped at 13, then returned to the sport at 17. His brother Brandon gave him the nickname "Duck" as a child because of his love of cartoon ducks.

Brandon Choy told The Coast News his brother is "a monster" on the pitch and that watching him play has turned rugby into a weekend favorite for the family.

Now drawing interest from multiple colleges, Choy has his senior year at Torrey Pines and a final Mustangs season ahead of him.
