A free memoir-writing workshop for older adults in Solana Beach starts Thursday, Oct. 8, and 15 spots are available.

Solana Beach Community Connections is accepting registrations now for the four-session series at La Colonia Park Community Center, 715 Valley Ave. The group meets Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon through Oct. 29, according to the city of Solana Beach.

Eberly Barnes, who retired after 12 years leading a writing program for undergraduates at UC San Diego, created the workshop and will lead all four sessions. Barnes has also worked as a speechwriter and freelance editor. She has published memoir stories. This is the seventh time she has run the workshop for SBCC.

One past participant said Barnes' prompts and timed exercises helped break through writing blocks and get words flowing again.

Each two-hour session gives participants topic suggestions, time to write and a chance to share reflections with classmates. Participants are expected to attend at least three of the four sessions.

Registration is first-come, first-served. Those who don't make the 15-person cutoff go on a waiting list. To sign up, call or text 858-284-6619 with your name, phone number and email address. Specify "October Writing Workshop."

The workshop is free. Tax-deductible donations by check can be mailed to Solana Beach Community Connections, P.O. Box 1723, Solana Beach, CA 92075.

Solana Beach residents who need a ride can call On the Go at 858-923-1344 at least five days ahead to schedule free transportation. On the Go is a pilot program for Solana Beach residents 65 and older, operated by Jewish Family Service and running weekdays through the end of October, according to The Coast News.
