Solana Beach residents 60 and older can sign up for free pickleball starting Tuesday, Sept. 1, when the city opens phone registration for two six-week leagues at La Colonia Park.

According to the city's Parks and Recreation Department, the program offers a beginner league on Tuesdays and an intermediate league on Thursdays, both from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the park's outdoor court at 715 Valley Ave. The format is round-robin doubles with rotating partners, so players won't need to bring a teammate. Neither session includes instruction.

The beginner league runs Tuesday, Sept. 15, through Tuesday, Oct. 20. The intermediate league runs Thursday, Sept. 17, through Thursday, Oct. 22.

Spots are limited.

Registration opens at 8 a.m. Sept. 1 by phone only at 858-720-2454. The same number handles questions about the program.

This is not the city's first senior pickleball offering. Solana Beach Parks and Recreation has previously run a senior league at the same location, and the fall leagues sit alongside the city's broader Mature Adult Activities programming for September and October, which includes other recreation options for older residents.

The court at La Colonia Park is a former basketball court the city extended to regulation pickleball dimensions, making it Solana Beach's first dedicated public pickleball facility. It features a permanent net, concrete surface and on-site restrooms. Outside of league hours, the court is free and open to the public.

To register for either league, call 858-720-2454 starting Tuesday, Sept. 1, at 8 a.m.
